Our South African Schools Literacy Project

Imagine all writing making as little sense. Imagine how powerless you?d feel. Millions of South Africans experience this everyday!!!

We live in a world increasingly dependent on the transfer of information and the ability to read and write to a large extent determines ones ability to obtain meaningful employment.  There are fewer jobs available for the illiterate person whose frustration and desperation often turns him or her to crime, drugs and drug trafficking. Learners who can?t read properly drop out of school resulting in unemployment, poverty, crime and hopelessness.

Insufficient funding and lack of awareness have kept the problem hidden in South Africa.

Consider these facts:

  • In South Africa 7 million learners still lack basic literacy skills.
  • The official national illiteracy rate for South Africa is extremely high - one in every six adults is deemed illiterate.
  • It is estimated that 40% of the population is functionally illiterate. In some rural areas, illiteracy rates are as high as 60%, alongside unemployment rates of 65%.
  • Literacy is essential in the fight against AIDS and other epidemics.
  • The majority of schools in under-privileged and rural areas are not equipped with adequate tools to teach literacy.

NGOs that focus on eliminating illiteracy in South Africa are seriously under-funded.  With the funds generated through the Care Cards campaign, we commission literacy-based NGOs to deliver their programmes in our nations schools.
